Guwahati, October29, 2017: Guwahati based GNRC Hospitals organized a press conference on ‘Prevention of Stroke’ today, to coincide with the global observance of ‘World Stroke Day’. Specialists from the hospital highlighted the prevalence rate of top 10 risk factors which are responsible for stroke, based on community based study conducted by them.

Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability, accounting for 1 in 10 deaths and a total of 44 million years of healthy life lost across the world each year. Stroke can happen to anyone at any time and affects everyone: survivors, family, friends, workplaces and communities. When it comes to Assam, studies in the past have stated that 64000 people suffers from stroke annually which comes down to 175 stroke patients every day. Amongst these patients 48 people die every day in Assam while 85 persons become disabled for life.

World Stroke Day is observed on 29th October every year, with an aim to bring together stroke stakeholders around the world in campaigns to raise awareness and advocate action to improve stroke prevention, treatment and support for survivors. This year’s theme is ‘What’s your reason for preventing stroke?’

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Nomal Chandra Borah, Chairman cum Managing Director, GNRC, said: “Globally, studies have stated that over 90% of strokes are linked to 10 key risk factors. By taking steps to address the causes of stroke at individual and population level, there are high chances to reduce the human, social and economic costs of stroke. To raise awareness about the seriousness of the issue, GNRC conducted a community based study to understand the prevalence rates of these factors which lead to stroke.”

Dr. Borah added that, “The highlights of the study are quite alarming. 60% of the people surveyed are suffering with cholesterol (LDL) related problems, 24% of them are suffering with high BP, and 22% are suffering with overweight issues. Further, ECG abnormality is prevalent among 17.5% of the respondents. As it is known Assam also ranks 15 in Human Development index among Indian states.”

Discussing lifestyle related activities, Dr. Borah added, “The study has also highlighted that 1 in 8 people smoke and also consume alcohol in the state. Not even 1% of the total respondents indulge in physical exercise regularly, which is disheartening. It is also shocking that very few are aware about the healthy dietary pattern one needs to follow. With such a lifestyle, the prevalence of diabetes is also high in the state, with 10% when compared to national average of 7%. Therefore, the need to follow steps to prevent stroke is increasing day by day.”
